Chapter 2: Diversity in the Living World
Interactive Study Hub: Biodiversity, Plant Types, Leaf Venation & Interdependence
What is Biodiversity?
Our planet hosts an immense variety of plants, animals, and microorganisms. This vast diversity of living beings in a region is known as biodiversity.
Why Grouping?
Classification helps us study living organisms systematically based on their similarities and differences rather than studying them individually.
Interdependence
Plants and animals depend on each other. Trees provide oxygen and shelter, while animals assist in seed dispersal and maintaining ecological balance.
Stem Comparison Herbs have soft, green, tender stems with minimal branching. Shrubs have harder, woody stems where multiple branches start branching right from the base near the ground.
Support & Sprawling Both possess weak stems. Climbers use upward vertical supports, while Creepers spread horizontally along the soil surface.
📋 Table 2.1: Plant Observations
| Plant Name | Stem Type | Leaf Venation | Flowers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hibiscus | Hard, woody | Net-like (Reticulate) | Yes (Red) |
| Grass | Soft, tender | Parallel lines | Tiny spikes |
| Mango Tree | Thick trunk | Reticulate venation | Yes (Clusters) |
1. Tomato and Coriander plants belong to which category based on their stem features?
2. Which plant type has weak stems and spreads horizontally along the ground?
The Confused Monkey
Imagine trying to group a monkey and a dolphin based only on habitats! The monkey says, “I live on trees!” and the dolphin says, “I live in the ocean!” Science helps us classify them properly based on internal body structures rather than just guessing.
The Plant Gossip Club
If leaves could chat, parallel venation leaves would boast: “We look like neat railway tracks!” while reticulate leaves would say: “We are complex spiderweb art!” Either way, both feed the plant!

Topic: Herbs, Shrubs, Trees, Climbers & Creepers (Stems & Heights)
Stem Comparison Herbs have soft, green, tender stems with minimal branching. Shrubs have harder, woody stems where multiple branches start branching right from the base near the ground (e.g., rose, lemon).
Support & Sprawling Both possess weak stems. Climbers use upward vertical supports (tendrils/walls), while Creepers spread horizontally along the soil surface.
Trunk Architecture In trees, the main stem (trunk) grows thick and tall, and branches appear much higher up in the upper part of the plant rather than near the ground.
1. Tomato and Coriander plants belong to which category based on their stem features?
2. Which plant type has weak stems and spreads horizontally along the ground?
3. Rose and Lemon bushes are classified as what?
