Grouping Animals by Movement
Topic: Walking, Flying, Swimming & Crawling Adaptations in Living Organisms
Habitat Adaptation An animal’s movement depends directly on its habitat (land, air, water) and body design. Birds adapted to the sky with wings, fish adapted to water with fins, and land mammals evolved robust legs for walking.
Slithering Mechanics Snakes have a long, flexible backbone and numerous muscles and scales. They loop their bodies sideways, pushing against the ground and rough surfaces to propel themselves forward in a wave-like motion.
Streamlined Body Fish have boat-like (streamlined) bodies that cut through water effortlessly. Their fins help maintain balance, while tail muscles whip back and forth for forward thrust.
1. Which group of animals primarily uses fins and a streamlined body to swim?
2. How does a snake move across the ground?
3. Which animal uses wings for aerial locomotion (flying)?
