Terrestrial & Aquatic Habitats

Topic: Deserts, Mountains, Aquatic Habitats & Biodiversity

Land vs Water Terrestrial habitats exist on land (forests, grasslands, deserts, mountains) where organisms breathe atmospheric oxygen. Aquatic habitats exist in water (oceans, ponds, rivers, lakes) where organisms utilize oxygen dissolved in water.

Water Conservation Broad leaves lose a massive amount of water through evaporation (transpiration). By transforming leaves into sharp spines, cacti minimize water loss while their thick green stems perform photosynthesis.

Cold Climate Adaptation Animals like snow leopards and yaks have thick fur coats and layers of fat under their skin to protect their bodies from bitter cold winds and sub-zero temperatures at high altitudes.

1. Which of the following is an example of an aquatic habitat?

❌ Deserts are dry terrestrial land habitats!
✅ Correct! Oceans and ponds are water-based aquatic habitats.

2. Why do cactus plants have spines in place of leaves?

✅ Spot on! Spines reduce evaporation in hot deserts.
❌ Cacti grow in dry deserts where there are no fish!

3. What kind of tree shape is commonly found on snowy mountain slopes?

✅ Awesome! Conical trees allow snow to slide off easily.
❌ Umbrella shapes are common in tropical plains, not snowy peaks.
